Description of the organization

Olipoli enters the alleys and neighborhoods of the city, gets inspired by its multicultural wealth and gives space to its expression. Its team organizes group workshops for adults and children, seminars, lectures, educational programs, open rehearsals, concerts and festivals, and undertakes the production of musical and artistic activities, establishing a network of musicians, artists, academics, students, organizations and anyone interested in the art of music.

Focusing on the cultivation of music performance and listening to music, as well as the production of artistic, educational and research work, olipoli promotes and strengthens the cooperation and coexistence of different communities and organizations of Thessaloniki, creating focal points of expression within the city.

Actions that the organisation has organised or in which it has actively participated

-Anopolis World Music Festival -A three day music festival, showcasing contemporary creative expressions inspired by the musical traditions of Greece, the Mediterranean and the Balkans. Transforming the historic neighborhood of Ano Poli of Thessaloniki into a concert space and creating a new harmonic soundscape amid the traditional old town environment, the festival will host various small musical groups and solo performances that will take place simultaneously in three different local spots.

-North Evia festival - With the transformative power of music, North Evia Festival aims to travel every summer to a different location of Northern Evia, supporting this part of the island literally… till the forest is back! This year, our meeting will take place in Rovies and Limni Evias! The festival's goal is to evolve over time, contributing to the creation of a community whose members will share their common love for music and nature, as well as being an integral part of the cultural life of the island.

-Eastern Modal Music Workshop, Terpsis Orchestra - The workshop aims at the acquaintance and study of the theoretical musical system of maqams through the performance and interpretation of Istanbul classical repertoire but also traditional songs of the Eastern Mediterranean and Greece. During the workshop we explore and come in contact with the organology, repertoire, rhythms, ways and improvised forms (taqsim) of this tradition, which will be assimilated through practice itself.

-Nefes Project - The vocal ensemble Nefes was founded in October 2019. In the form of a workshop, under the teaching of Elena Moudiri Chasiotou, it studies a wide repertoire of traditional music of the Mediterranean and the Balkans, also approaching it in a theatrical way. It performs original voice cover versions, through group dynamics, vocal and physical improvisation. Rhythm and breathing guide, bringing us together with both our body and the ensemble

-From Asia Minor to Northern Evia - A performance combining the screening of stories of present-day descendants of refugees and archival photographs with the live presentation of original compositions based on the rhythms and melodies of Asia Minor, attempts to capture the contribution of refugees to the shaping of this place’s, Northern Evia, new identity, taking the audience on a journey across a past yet recent space-time continuum.

-Bridges Online - Amidst the pandemic, a series of online seminars and lectures were held. Bridges_online 2021 was completed in three modules, each focusing in a different way on technical and theoretical issues as well as compositional issues, arising from engagement and immersion in musical traditions!
